Symptoms

  • Pain in the upper right or centre of the abdomen, often after fatty meals
  • Pain spreading to the right shoulder or back
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin, or fever (seek care urgently)

Diagnosis

An ultrasound scan of the abdomen is the main test. Blood tests check liver function and signs of infection.

Surgical treatment

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy removes the gallbladder through small cuts. You can live normally without a gallbladder.

  1. Day 1Sit up, walk and take sips of fluids
  2. Day 2Usually discharged home
  3. Week 1Light activity; avoid very fatty meals
  4. Week 2Most people return to work

Typical recovery. Your own timeline depends on your health and the procedure chosen.
