Symptoms

  • Pain and swelling at the top of the buttock cleft
  • Pus or blood draining from a small opening
  • A foul smell from the discharge
  • Fever with an infected abscess

Treatment options

An acute abscess is drained first. Long-term cure usually needs removal of the sinus tract. Modern techniques aim to reduce recurrence and speed up healing.

Laser and minimally invasive treatment

Laser sinus ablation is a minimally invasive option for selected patients, with a small wound and faster return to work.

Prevention

  • Keep the area clean and dry
  • Remove hair from the area regularly as advised
  • Avoid sitting for long periods without breaks
